PPISMP TESL Students Embark on Immersive Field Research in Langkawi
From April 21st to 24th, 2024, the Language Department of Institut Pendidikan Guru Kampus Sultan Abdul Halim organized an exciting field research session for its PPISMP TESL June 2023 intake students. The four-day excursion to the picturesque island of Langkawi provided a unique opportunity for 25 TESL students and 8 accompanying lecturers to conduct research and explore the local culture. The program was coordinated by Dr. Muhammad Aiman bin Ismail.
The field research session was part of the TSLB 1114 English Language Skills in Academic Context course, allowing students to put their theoretical knowledge into practice. The primary objective was to interview foreign tourists and gather data for their research on selected topics related to language studies.
On April 21st, the group departed from the IPG Kampus Sultan Abdul Halim and made their way to the Kuala Perlis jetty, where they embarked on a ferry journey to Langkawi Island at 2 p.m. The Langkawi Tourism Academy (Kolej Komuniti Langkawi) provided accommodation for the group during their stay.
Over the next two days, April 22nd and 23rd, the students immersed themselves in field research activities, conducting interviews with foreign tourists and observing the local culture and customs. This hands-on experience not only enriched their understanding of research methodologies but also provided valuable insights into cross-cultural communication and language use in real-world settings.
In addition to the research component, the students had the opportunity to explore the breathtaking landscapes and attractions of Langkawi, further enhancing their overall educational experience.
On April 24th, the group bid farewell to the island and departed from Kuah Jetty at 2 p.m., returning to Kuala Perlis with a wealth of knowledge and memories.
The Language Department at IPG Kampus Sultan Abdul Halim continues to prioritize experiential learning opportunities that complement theoretical studies. Such field research sessions not only equip students with practical research skills but also foster a deeper appreciation for cultural diversity and language in context.
